Where to Try

Everywhere. Legendary spots include the momo stalls of New Road, Bota Momo in Jhamsikhel, and any random stall with a long queue.

Momos are Nepal's most iconic street food and arguably the most popular snack in the country. These dumplings, originally brought by Newar traders from Tibet, have become so embedded in Nepali culture that they've spawned an entire cottage industry.

Traditional momos are filled with minced buffalo (buff) meat, onions, garlic, ginger, and spices, wrapped in thin dough and steamed. But the variations are endless: chicken momo, vegetable momo, paneer momo, jhol momo (in spicy soup), kothey momo (pan-fried on one side), C-momo (drenched in spicy chutney), tandoori momo, and even chocolate momo for dessert.

The key accompaniment is the achar — a spicy tomato-based dipping sauce that varies from shop to shop and is the subject of fierce loyalty. Some places have lines around the block purely because of their achar recipe.

From five-star hotels to plastic-stool street stalls, momos unite all of Nepal. A plate of steaming momos with a bowl of red achar on a cold Kathmandu evening is pure happiness.
