Buddha Jayanti celebrates the triple anniversary of Siddhartha Gautama's birth, enlightenment, and death (parinirvana), all believed to have occurred on the full moon day of Baisakh (April/May). Nepal, as the birthplace of Buddha, holds special significance during this global celebration.
The main celebrations take place at Lumbini, where thousands of monks, nuns, and devotees gather at the Mayadevi Temple. Special prayers, meditation sessions, and processions continue throughout the day. The monasteries in the Lumbini International Monastic Zone hold elaborate ceremonies in their respective traditions.
In Kathmandu, the celebrations focus on Boudhanath and Swayambhunath stupas. The stupas are decorated with Buddhist flags, butter lamps are lit by the thousands, and monks lead circumambulation prayers. Many Buddhist families observe sil (eight precepts) and offer alms.
The day is a national holiday in Nepal, reflecting the country's deep connection to Buddha's legacy.
