Rara Lake is Nepal's largest lake and one of its most remote and pristine destinations. Sitting at 2,990 meters in Mugu district, the lake's deep blue waters are surrounded by dense forests of pine, spruce, and juniper, with snow-capped peaks reflected on its surface.

Rara National Park, Nepal's smallest national park, was established to protect the lake and its surrounding ecosystems. Wildlife includes Himalayan black bear, red panda, musk deer, and over 200 bird species. The rhododendrons bloom spectacularly in spring.

Reaching Rara requires either a flight to Talcha (from Nepalgunj) followed by a short trek, or a multi-day trek through remote western Nepal. This inaccessibility keeps visitor numbers low, preserving the area's wild character. The lake circuit walk takes about 4 hours.

Rara is sometimes called the 'Queen of Lakes' and locals have deep spiritual reverence for it. The experience of standing at this remote, crystal-clear lake surrounded by mountains and absolute silence is unlike anything else in Nepal.
